A major milestone positions AKATA Energy to begin local manufacturing and nationwide rollout.
AKATA Energy is pleased to announce the successful homologation of the CS1 electric motorcycle, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s electric mobility landscape. Completed on 14 November 2025, this achievement certifies the CS1 for full road use and unlocks the next phase of local manufacturing, distribution, and commercial deployment across the country.
Key Details & Background
The homologation process ensures that a vehicle meets all national safety, performance, and regulatory standards required for road legality. The CS1 — formerly known as the TS1 — underwent extensive testing and evaluation, including electrical safety, braking performance, lighting compliance, EMC testing, and structural verification.
The successful completion of this process represents a crucial step in AKATA Energy’s strategy to establish South Africa as a regional hub for electric two-wheel manufacturing. It also validates years of research, development, and local adaptation to meet the unique demands of African road conditions.
The CS1 is the first model in AKATA Energy’s new-generation electric motorcycle lineup and will be locally manufactured at the company’s Rand West City facility. The platform supports the company’s Battery-as-a-Service model, enabling affordable and sustainable transport for both individual riders and commercial fleets.
“Achieving homologation for the CS1 is a major milestone for AKATA Energy,” said Lawrence Jordaan, Head of Energy at AKATA Energy. “It validates the technical excellence of our R&D team and brings us one step closer to delivering a locally manufactured electric motorcycle built specifically for South Africa and the wider African market.”
Impact / Benefits
The homologation of the CS1 brings significant benefits to the South African mobility sector:
- Customers gain access to a safe, compliant, and affordable electric motorcycle tailored to local commuting and delivery environments.
- Businesses & Fleets can begin large-scale adoption of electrified transport supported by predictable and low operational costs.
- Industry moves closer to establishing South Africa as a producer — not merely an importer — of advanced EV technology.
- Environment benefits from reduced carbon emissions and decreased dependence on internal combustion engines.
- Workforce & Economy gain new opportunities through local manufacturing, technical training, and supply-chain expansion.
“This development will provide accessible, clean-mobility solutions to riders and fleet operators across South Africa, helping to strengthen the country’s position in the emerging electric vehicle industry.”
